problem how can we create an space where females can feel confident and empowered to lead a healthy lifestyle and encourage & energize other women?

the idea

The theme I wanted to tackle was a program that was health oriented and one that would promote wellbeing. In the last couple of years, there’s been a growing trend in people, especially amongst women, participating in different types of fitness studios, ranging from CrossFit to yoga. However, I’ve noticed amongst my own community as well as through a survey I made that a lot females felt intimidated in a gym setting that is often overpowered by men. Another huge factor that deterred some females was that even if they were to go to a standard gym, many noted that they didn’t know how to use some of the machines and what exercises to perform. I wanted to challenge myself to create a pop-up fitness program using these containers that not only targets a growing population of people interested in exercising, but also catering it to women to encourage a healthy lifestyle and help females feel empowered. .

the users

Using the data that I gathered from the survey, I made two potential users that would use this program, one as a member and the other a fitness coach. Creating these personas helped understand the ways in which the program should be designed in order to support both of their goals.

the site

Location: Bryant Park, NYC

Bryant Park is a 9.603-acre privately managed public park located in Manhattan. It’s located between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas and between 40th and 42nd Streets in Midtown Manhattan. It’s an extremely popular destination for those living within the city as well as for visitors. The park is used in a variety of ways to support a diverse range of events and free activities that people can engage in, including the Christmas Winter Village and Winter Festival. Adjacent to the New York Public Library, it features a large open green space for people to enjoy, especially during the summer months. It’s a popular spot for families, students and businessmen alike, with 12 million people visiting the park each year.

The reason for choosing Bryant Park as the location is because it’s a place that already supports various pop-up events. It also allows the programming to be flexible in terms of what people can do and the configuration of the containers could vary depending on the fitness event offered.

programming

For this program, since it’s both a fitness space as well as a promoter for healthy living, I wanted to include a stage and fitness space, a changing room, a juice bar, a merchandise shop, and an info desk. The event will work on a sign-in basis where people can sign up for a pop-up event in advance and check-in at the info desk the day of the event. Some of the fitness events include yoga, aerobic dance, high intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.) and H.I.I.T. boxing.

The containers are configured in such a way that they create an enclosed space, enabling the structure to serve as a way to distinguish the program as a separate event and provides some sense of privacy with the semi-permeable partitions. The 40ft container is split with one side being the stage for the fitness instructor and the other begin the shop that sells branded water bottles, clothing, tote bags and such. The stage section also has a screen feature that appears when the side of the container is lifted up. This can be used to project the fitness instructor as well as any educational presentations that are a part of the event.

For further exploration, it would be interesting to see what other configurations are possible and how such configurations may differ depending on different pop-up locations beyond Bryant Park, as well as examining different ways to create semi-permeable partitions using other materials.

branding

These are several different concepts that I designed for the exteriors of the containers that could further advertise and promote the event to passersby and give a stronger sense of identity to the business.
